Inclusion of Persons with Special Needs in the Home

Abstract

The burden of changing our society rests squarely on every home. The thesis of this paper is hinged on the premise that special needs children in Nigeria have been discriminated against even in their homes. These discriminatory practices the paper observes, is born out of ignorance, misconception and misinformation. The paper further posits that total inclusio n is what the special need child requires to take their rightful place in the home. Consequent upon this, a child with special needs, if lifted from the quagmire of disability through total acceptance and inclusion in the entire life of the family, can ach ieve higher state of existence. We should therefore, strive to ensure total inclusion of all children in our homes irrespective of their conditions in the lives of the family.The paper concludes that full inclusion of persons with special needs can only su cceed where parents and members of the family are prepared to treat the special need child in all aspects of life as equal as any other member of the family.
